ooVoo has always existed to bring you closer to your friends and to give you a space to create special moments and experiences. Many of you who are reading this article right now may remember the ooVoo all nights, ooVoo dates and just good times and lit hangouts in general 🔥 they are all here to stay.
So why change? And why chains?
When planning the new ooVoo our goal was to take the relationship you already have with your friends and make it stronger and more consistent. Here’s how we got there -
In the previous versions of ooVoo the vast majority of usage came from video calls. The thing that always stood out was the fact that when none of your friends is online, or if you have no friends at all there is not much you could do on ooVoo. A very common case we’ve seen is that people who heard about ooVoo or found it randomly signed up but since they had no friends, or due to the fact that approving friend requests takes time they left the app.
Then we started thinking what is the best and innovative option that we can offer when the goal is to have something that makes the relationship between you and your friends\significant other stronger but doesn’t require both of you to be online at the same time - and that’s how chains were born.
We won’t go deep into the chains philosophy (although it’s totally worth it) but we feel that giving you and your friends a casual space to hang out between video calls would be super awesome. There also the potential value of getting exposed to other groups of friends, adding chain links on top one another and create video-like stories and moments together.
Long story short, it’s all about the story of you and your friends being told and unfolded as we go.
Threads chat and other things we will miss
Couple of words on text chat since a lot of people are missing it: Over the last couple of years we tweak and expanded our text chat that had the interface you all know from other applications. In the new ooVoo we decided to replace text chat with chain-chat, mainly because of two main reasons:
1) Text usage on ooVoo was super popular in around 2013-2015 and declining ever since. When analyzing our text chat data, doing surveys and working with people who use the app we found out that for most of the people text-chat was mainly used to coordinate video calls, kind of like: “Hey, ready?” “Yes”. We feel like we can create a better and more convenient solution.
2) The text message system was costly to maintain, less from a monetary standpoint and more from a technological perspective: As apps began to market better and stronger chat applications and technology evolved with features like stickers or gifs, we decided that we should invest resources in making ooVoo a better app in other sections such as video, content sharing and other cool stuff currently in research.
The thing we’re most excited about in the new ooVoo is the fact that we got to a stage where we have the infrastructure to create new, amazing innovative things. We rewrote the video code from the ground up which should give you better video quality (and us the room to improve it even further) and what you’re seeing in chains is just the basic beginning of a feature we can take to great places.
"Released" doesn't mean "Done" and you are a part of the change! One of the things we are aiming for is to bring you all closer to our development map so you will have visibility into what’s coming up next because to be honest there no ooVoo without you and there was no ooVoo up until now without the amazing people who has been using it and the special moment you create.
Stay around, feel free to reach out and let us know what you think.
Forever fam 💛
